As part of Sullivan Hill's ongoing partnership with downtown neighbor Washington Elementary School, firm attorney Sean Gaffney recently served as judge for a mock trial conducted by Washington's 5th grade class. Students served as bailiffs, witnesses, attorneys, and jurors in a case involving criminal charges for damage to school property, and conducted the trial before the 4th grade class. In addition to learning more about courtroom decorum, the examination of witnesses, jury deliberations and other features of the justice system, the mock trial also afforded the students a chance to practice their public speaking and creative writing skills.
At the end of May, the firm will continue their partnership by hosting ‘Lunch with a Lawyer’ series at the firm's office for those students who participated in the mock trial. The students will dine with attorneys and firm staff and learn more about the different careers available in the legal field.
In June, the firm will present several students from the 5th grade class with awards for their leadership during the mock trial as well as present the ‘Principal Leadership Award’ which is given to a student in recognition of a particular student's individual excellence in scholarship, citizenship and leadership abilities.. The awards will be presented at the 5th grade promotional ceremony at the school.
Sullivan Hill was recently included in Washington’s partners poster, as seen below.
